In this problem, students work in teams to design a new type of roller coaster ride. Students act as engineers to design a model roller coaster with “cars” (marbles) that are launched using elastic potential energy. The problem specifies that the cars travel over two hills of the same height. The teacher may change the specifications of the ride as desired. The simulation gives students a way to explore transformations between kinetic and potential energy on a roller coaster. A materials list, teacher background information, safety practices, assessment, and outcomes are provided. This book selection includes the Table of Contents, Preface, Catalog of Problems, Acknowledgments, About the Authors, Image Credits, and Index.
