Area Conference in Pittsburgh

October 29–31, 2020

Due to ongoing health and safety concerns caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the National Science Teaching Association has decided to cancel the fall 2020 Area Conferences on Science Education. The face-to-face meetings were originally scheduled to be held October 29–31 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; November 19–21 in New Orleans, Louisiana; and December 10–12 in Phoenix, Arizona.

In making this decision, NSTA considered feedback from members and conference participants, including exhibitors and session presenters, state and local guidance on large gatherings, and guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization. This decision was made for the health and safety of our attendees, exhibitors, presenters, volunteers, and staff.

We appreciate the work our conference committees have put in to meeting our members’ and the greater science education community’s professional needs, and their continued guidance as we re-envision the conferences as a virtual experience in the fall. We will share additional information as soon as it is available. Thank you for your continued understanding and support while we navigate these unprecedented and challenging times.

Conference Strands

strands iconTo help you make the most of the professional development opportunities available at the Pittsburgh conference, the Conference Committee has planned the conference around three strands that explore topics of current significance, enabling you to focus on a specific area of interest or need.

Innovating for the Future

In order for students to create intelligent solutions to real-world issues and problems and prosper in this rapidly changing educational landscape, teachers need to integrate and use innovative practices. The use of makerspaces, computational thinking, computer science, engineering design, and three-dimensional learning are examples of innovative practices and approaches. This strand will provide preK through postsecondary educators with examples of how to incorporate innovative practices and strategies in a low-cost or easily obtainable way to enhance all students' understanding of science.

Striving Toward Inclusive Science

All students in preK through postsecondary should be able to see themselves in the field of science, and educators are increasingly integrating new approaches to support their students, whether they are underrepresented, underserved, under-resourced, or even "under-interested." Inclusivity, diversity, equity, and accessibility (IDEA) are important considerations for teachers in the creation of a welcoming learning environment for students to become confident learners. This strand will explore ways for educators to use the best practices and research to reach ALL students, including English language learners, special education students, gifted and talented students, and underrepresented populations.

STEAMing Across the Disciplines

Students make deeper learning connections through rich interdisciplinary experiences both in and outside the classroom. STEAM education engages and inspires the learner by showing the interconnectedness of our world. This strand will highlight the confluence of science, literacy, math, technology, career pathways, and the arts through presentations and workshops focusing on interdisciplinary learning in preK through postsecondary.
